The sanctuary of St Vardan the General


As it is known in 451 on the bank of Tghmut river on the field called Avarayr Vardan Mamikonyan with his Armenian army has combated with the Persian Hazkert 2nd Shah. The aim of the war was to protect the Christian faith.
Because Armenia was the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, an event traditionally dated to AD 301.The battle is now well-known in the history as a battle of Avarayr.
According to the folklore the wounded General Vardan Mamikonyan has died in Angeghakot village where he was buried. The burial place is sanctuary for people. Every year in summer times a week before Vardavar festival people sacrifice in honor to the General.
